Hello,
when will the log files for each pilot be available online so that they can be downloaded for bug racing.
Thanks and regards,

Passionnant!

Hi to you all!

I am following the grand prix from Norway. Of course I am fan of the Italian team!
I like the idea and vPos through internet can finally make the competition visible.

I think that two improvements could be, first to be able to install a vPos viewer on remote computers and have the stream of data be sent to my
terminal. This way I can choose myself how to view the development of the competition.

The second improvement could be (if the first one is too complicated) to have somebody to write a minute by minute (or every 5 minutes) update of the
situation. E.g. Galetto is ahead but lower than the followers. Gostner has turned the point in third place, etc...

As an idea one can take the Formula 1 website to see how one can follow the competition through internet. A real time vPos streaming data to remote vPos
viewers of course would increase the attractiveness even more.

Just some thoughts.
Bring my regards to the Italian team and have a successful event!

Best regards,

Eduardo Jacucci

This is by far the best competition website I have come across: excellent news, videos and prompt results.  The live tracking is a great feature, even better if all competitors were equipped every task.  The format of the comp makes for exciting flying and spectating.  I'm not sure about the scoring system yet.  It would be interesting, at the end of the week, to see if the same pilots would be top three with the 1000 point system.

Hi,
Great event, exciting with Regattastart, and then first home is the winner.
The tracking is fantastic too (when it works!), but all gliders should
have vpos-units.

Very nice pictures, hopefully some from different turnpoints will be
available later.

One very popular idea, used at the WGC2004 at Elverum, Norway, was to make
the IGC-files available for downloads. Many "home-pilots" using
flightsimulators could then "compete" with the pros!

Good luck with the weather, and the remainding of the competition.
Regards, Oivind Marman, Oslo, Norway.

bonjour :) , really like idea of grand prix, it's much more exciting and interesting than normal gliding competitions. i was flying competetive for 5 years and would love to parcitipate in competetition like this!!!
things to improve:
1 webcam
2 still can't see dynamic flight visualisation from task2
3 when you write sth has happened like damaged landing gear, please attach a picture of it, always couriose of such details
everything else I find really great, organisation and great championships, just hope weather will improve

congrats and regards from POLAND!

Hi

I think that the GP format looks good. I guess that the regatta start method restricts the number of pilots - or is there a provision for
multiple start gates?

My comments are about the website and tracking.

Website: The website team has been very good about keeping the new flowing
- but more news would be nice.

If you were able to the following would be nice ...
- Webcams of the weather, grid and finish line
- More news and photos

Tracking: I'm very impressed but

- could you have several pages available
1) Overhead shot so you can see who is leading
2) a table of the data available (pilot, height, speed, dist done,
turnpoints rounded,  etc)

Keep up the good work and I hope the weather improves for the competition!

Dear friends,

thank you very much for those wonderful videos on your website, but unfortunately the video "race-040905" does not work.

Congratulations for a wonderful job you are doing in giving informations to all of us over the internet.

Dear Roland,
Your website has asked for feed back .....................

You are to be congratulated on your website, a fine piece of work and regularly updated also.
Perhaps a chat and or message facility would assist the interaction of the visitors to the web site. (ma non troppo!)

The tracking and videos are most impressive and clearly now take our sport into the realms of a saleable world-wide mass-market where all the world can enjoy the excitement of cross-country racing and sponsors can get a significant return on their investment.

Keep up the good, nay excellent  work!

The weather,as ever, is conspiring against you - perhaps the next Grand Prix should be held in sunnier climes, may I suggest South Africa? Having organised the 2001 WGC they are clearly up for this level of event.

Kind regards

Hello Roland,

Here in Holland quite a lot of pilots know the GP and I have heard of  10+ people that they are following it on a daily basis.
I have also interested a couple of friends and neighbours who enjoy it.The tracking is informative, but a bit static: if the 30 sec.
interval could be reduced,it would be more lively.
The total presentation is very good. The news gives a good idea of  what's going on and the photos give an excellent impression.

Sorry for you all that the weather doesn't cooperate, but there are still three days to go; who knows.........
Tomorrow I am leaving for Gap and I have the intention to go to the farewell-party Sundayevening (if we are wellcome) to encourage the
one and only Dutch participant.
If you see Erik, please give him many greeetings of his old club: the  KZC.

Kind regards, good luck and see you.

Salut Roland,

Nico VAUNOIS

Roland,

Really excellent site, content and presentation !!!
One really gets a buzz from the atmosphere generated by the script,
photos and VPOS.............pity about the weather though !!

Will keep logging on hoping for a race day........best of luck

Dear Roland,

You asked for feedback on the Grand Prix website. I have only one word to describe it: FABULOUS !!

It is crystal clear to navigate, always up to date (even when it rains) and off course you have the real time tracking showing all competitors
in stead of the usual 2 or 3.

So from me you receive only compliments and no critics :-)

Kind regards from Holland

The poor weather for this premier is unfortunate, but I feel this type of competition will certainly add some new life and support for our sport. I'm
also very impressed, as usual, with the St. Auban team, who also do the best they can - good weather or bad.

Best regards,

Hi

Saw the site for the first time today and followed the race online.  A new experience and one I greatly enjoyed.

Some thoughts.

Is it possible to refresh the picture more frequently than every 30s?  This would be especially useful when showing shots of individual gliders rather
than the overall positions in the race.  If a series of, say, 10 shots of individual gliders are shown between the overall positions then a wait of
perhaps 5 minutes is required to see how the race is going overall - long enough to lose interest perhaps!

The satellite imagery is great - seeing the gliders today below the level of the hills was fascinating - getting me rushing to my air maps to see how
high the mountains actually are in your area (higher than the gliders most of the time).  However, it can be quite difficult to follow the tracks of
the gliders and to make out their details against the background.  Perhaps it would be possible to make the tracks a bit wider / bolder, and, perhaps
to have the ID and height against a white background.  Whilst names are 'friendly' they do take up a lot of space and tend to superimpose - would it
be possible just to show the IDs?

I can think of loads of possible enhancements if the user had control of the image being received, but I guess this is beyond the current technology.  As
a way for gliding comps to go this seems really excellent.  I also like the simple scoring system.  I'm a supporter of Competition Enterprise in the UK
which has been promoting simpler scoring for years.

Keep up the great work -  (and pass best wishes to Andy Davis and Mike Young
in Team GB).

 Regards

Hi roland,
a great job and the feedback fro Bruce is of a very exciting and interesting competition. Such a high standard of pilots make it very interesting. Real racing is impressing the pilots and those of us watching from afar.

Cannot do much about the weather, but it must be really frustrating for you. Keep going. A small task is just as exciting as a big task.

I hope the last few days go well, and the Salon attracts a good crowd.

The web page is great. We cannot watch the tracking due to the time difference, but the other info is great.

Bonjour,

Shame about the weather.

You asked for opinions...

I think day 2 exposed some weakness in the way points are allocated. 6 pilot spearated by 16 seconds.... 1st gets 10 pts, 6th gets 4 pts... does not remotely reflect how close the competitors were.

Maybe you should group finsihers that are very close with the same time - like the Tour de france and perhaps give the first across the finish line 10 points - all those that are separated from the winner and subsequently from each other by no more than 30 seconds get 9 points.  if there is a gap of more than 30 seconds then the next finisher gets 8 points - anyone finishing within 30 secs of him also gets 8 points. If there is another gap of more than 30 seconds then the next pilot gets 7 points - etc. etc.

As long as the very first finisher gets a bonus of 1 point then you will still have a dramatic race to the line.

following pilots will try to close up on pilots ahead of them to get within 30 seconds of them. Pilots in front will try to stretch the gap to force a 1 point difference.

Regards

Paul Crabb.

Hi

I would have like to visit you during the Grand Prix, but it was not possible.  Your home page on Internet has been a nice way of taking part in the action.  Thanks.

If it is feasible to get out some more pictures and information related to what is happening on the glider exhibition it would be appreciated.

Sincerely

Hello,
first of all congratulations to the Grand Prix. Great web covering and live tracking. I was watching this from the US.
My question. In the picture I enclosed it shows a glider/ultralight plane. What kind of plane is this and where can I get information. On the fuselage it says "Taurus" but I couldnt find anything on the internet about it...

Thanks for your help.

Roland: We have been directing readers of Gliding and Motorgliding International (http://www.glidingmagazine.com) to your website for information about the Sailplane Grand Prix, but we should like to know much more about it, particularly the pilots' accounts of their flights and their response to the Grand Prix idea, and the response of the general media to the event. We are currently devoting a lot of space to articles about the decline of club and national organization membership and what can be done about it, and have taken a lot of interest in this attempt to attract the attention of the public through the general media.  We invite the world's national and club newsletters and magazines to download the articles in GMI and reprint them without risk of copyright infringement, so any news and feature articles you can send us will get an immediately world circulation. Do you have email addresses of the pilots who are comfortable writing in English? Val Brain, editor, GMI
Brain John

Thu, 15 Sep 2005 16:15:50 -0400

Roland: Thanks for your reply. The GMI website has been really screwed up since SSA took over the site, and has only just got back its photo section, which went down in January! I try to get my email address out whenever I ask for readers' letters, but the dedicated email address I was promised never materialized. This one is my university address. The Sailplane Grand Prix idea is an interesting experiment and deserves all the publicity we can give it. As a professional PR type, I can imagine the stress of staging a race in which all the contestants land out -- and apparently that nearly happened. I'm sorry I missed any materials you sent me, but was able to follow the event on your website and tell others about it. Now I'd like to know what the pilots thought, what the audience thought, and if any video is being put together in documentary form. At the rate cell phones etc. are developing, it may one day be possible to fly along with the contestants on our computer screens. Stay in touch! Val

Etienne GED
